Live sports are the reason many Canadians look at IPTV in the first place: NHL on a Saturday night, the CFL, the NBA and MLB, Premier League and Champions League mornings, UFC and boxing pay-per-view events. They are also the hardest test for any streaming setup, because everyone watches at the same moment and nobody wants to see the winning goal three seconds late or frozen. This guide covers IPTV sports viewing, from finding the game to the best settings. For more background, see Speedtest.
This guide covers how to find the games, how to set up your home for the smoothest picture, and how to handle the busiest nights of the season.
Finding the game
Most IPTV services group sports channels by country and league. In your app:
- Open the Sports or Canada Sports category for national sports networks.
- Look for league or event categories (NHL, NFL, NBA, soccer, PPV) that some services add on game days.
- Use the TV guide (EPG) to see what is on each channel right now and later. If the guide is empty, see how to fix the EPG.
- Use search for the team or event name. Many apps search the guide as well as channel names.
Before the season starts, add your go-to sports channels to Favourites. On game night, you open Favourites and you are there in two clicks. Our channel list shows the Canadian and sports channels included.
Pick the right quality for your connection
Many sports channels come in several versions: SD, HD, FHD and sometimes 4K. More is not always better:
- 4K looks stunning on a big TV, but needs a steady 25 Mbps or more on the device. If there is any doubt, it is the first to stutter.
- FHD or HD is the sweet spot for most homes. Sharp on any TV, and much more forgiving when the network is busy.
- Keep a backup: if the channel you are on freezes, switch to its other version immediately instead of waiting.

Set up your home for game night
- Use Ethernet for the main TV. A cable between the router and the TV device is the single biggest improvement for live sports.
- If you use Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz and keep the router in the same or next room.
- Restart the router and device an hour before a big game. It clears memory and gives you a fresh connection.
- Pause heavy downloads: game consoles, computer updates and cloud backups can eat your bandwidth right when the game starts.
- Update your IPTV app in the days before a big event, not during it.
The best player settings for sports
- Frame rate: sports are broadcast at 60 frames per second in many cases. On Apple TV, turn on Match Frame Rate. On NVIDIA Shield and some Android TVs, turn on Match content frame rate. Motion looks smoother and more natural.
- Buffer size: in TiviMate, a Medium or Large buffer absorbs short drops in speed. See the TiviMate guide.
- Player choice: in IPTV Smarters, if a sports channel stutters, try a different option in Settings > Player Selection.
- TV motion settings: many TVs add “motion smoothing”. Some people like it for sports; if the picture looks unnatural, turn it down in the TV’s picture settings.
Watching several games at once
Hockey playoffs and soccer tournaments often have games at the same time. Options:
- Multi-view: TiviMate Premium on powerful devices like the NVIDIA Shield can show several channels on one screen.
- Second screen: keep one game on the TV and another on a tablet or laptop. This uses two of your plan’s screens. See multiple devices.
- Catch-up: on channels that support it, watch the second game from the start as soon as the first one ends.
Handling the busiest nights
Stanley Cup playoff games, the Super Bowl, the Grey Cup and big fight nights are the busiest moments for every streaming service and internet provider. To stay ahead:
- Tune in 10 minutes early, so your stream is running before the rush.
- Choose FHD over 4K for the biggest events unless you are on fibre with Ethernet.
- Know your backup: have a second version of the channel in your Favourites.
- If a stream stops, go back to the channel list and reopen it. That often reconnects faster than waiting.
If you still see freezing, work through our 8 buffering fixes in order.
Avoiding spoilers from delay
All streaming, including official apps from broadcasters, runs a few seconds to a minute behind the TV antenna signal. If a neighbour or a phone notification might spoil a goal, turn off score alerts in your sports apps during the game.
Watching on the go
Stuck away from the TV? Install the player on your phone and log in with the same details. See IPTV on iPhone and iPad. On mobile data, choose HD to save data: an hour of HD sport uses a few gigabytes.
The Canadian sports calendar

IPTV Sports: frequently asked questions
Can I watch my local NHL team on IPTV?
Coverage depends on the channels in your service. Check the channel list for the Canadian sports networks and regional channels that carry your team, and ask us before subscribing if you are unsure.
Are pay-per-view events included?
Many services include a PPV category for major fights and events. Our plans include PPV and sports events. Check the event listing close to the date.
Why is my stream behind my friend’s cable?
Internet streams are always slightly behind broadcast TV because of encoding and buffering. A few seconds to half a minute is normal for any streaming service.
