Here are the three ways to connect an IPTV box to two TVs, and the limits of each. You have IPTV working on one TV and now want it in the bedroom or basement too. Can one box feed two TVs? Technically yes, but with an important catch: both TVs will show the same channel. If you want different channels in each room, you need a device for each TV. This guide explains every option, what it costs, and what it means for your subscription. For more background, see Amazon’s Fire TV help pages.
The key question: same channel or different channels?
- Same channel on both TVs (for example, the game in the living room and the kitchen): one box with a splitter or a wireless HDMI kit works.
- Different channels in each room: you need a second streaming device, and a plan with at least two screens if both will play at the same time.
Option 1: A second streaming device (recommended)
The simplest and most flexible option. Plug a second stick into the other TV and install the same app with the same login.
- Cost: the price of a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device.
- Result: each TV has its own remote, its own channel and its own favourites.
- Subscription: if both TVs watch at the same time, choose a plan with 2 screens. If they rarely overlap, one screen may be enough.
Setup guides: Firestick, Google TV. If the second TV is a recent Samsung or LG, you may not need a stick at all: Samsung, LG.
Option 2: HDMI splitter (same channel, close by)
An HDMI splitter takes one HDMI output and sends it to two TVs.
- Connect the box’s HDMI output to the splitter’s input.
- Connect each TV to an output of the splitter with an HDMI cable.
- Power the splitter if it needs it.
Things to know:
- Both TVs show exactly the same picture and are controlled by one remote.
- Long HDMI cables (over about 10 to 15 metres) can lose signal; use active or fibre HDMI cables for long runs.
- If one TV is 4K and the other HD, the splitter may output HD to both. Choose a splitter with 4K down-scaling if that matters.
- Choose a splitter that supports HDCP, the standard copy protection used by streaming devices, or the picture may not display.
Option 3: Wireless HDMI kit (same channel, another room)
A wireless HDMI transmitter sends the picture from the box to a receiver next to the second TV, without running cables through the walls. Range and quality depend on the kit and on walls between rooms. It still shows the same channel on both TVs.
Option 4: Screen mirroring or casting
If the second TV has Chromecast built in, AirPlay, or supports screen mirroring, you can cast from a phone running the IPTV app. It works for occasional viewing, but the phone must stay on. See IPTV on Roku for mirroring steps that apply to many TVs.
Comparison
| Option | Different channels? | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second device | Yes | A streaming stick | Most homes |
| HDMI splitter | No | Low | Two TVs close together, same event |
| Wireless HDMI | No | Medium | Same event in another room |
| Casting / mirroring | Yes, from the phone | None | Occasional use |
What this means for your subscription
A splitter or wireless kit uses one stream, so it counts as one screen. A second device playing a different channel is a second screen. If you often watch in two rooms at once, choose 2 screens to avoid “maximum connections” errors. More in watching on multiple devices and choosing the right plan.
Internet for two rooms
Two TVs playing different channels need about twice the bandwidth: roughly 30 Mbps for two HD streams. Make sure the Wi-Fi reaches the second room well; a mesh system or Ethernet helps. See internet speed for IPTV.
IPTV Box to Two TVs: frequently asked questions
Can I use the same login on two TVs?
Yes. Install the app on each device and log in with the same details. Your plan sets how many can play at once.
Can one Firestick feed two TVs?
Only with a splitter or wireless kit, and both TVs will show the same thing. A second stick is usually cheaper than a quality splitter setup.
